SYNOPSIS

Tawfiq, a struggling artist in Kuala Lumpur, has spent his entire life resenting his father, Awang, a once-hot-tempered fisherman whose violent past shattered their family. In a fit of rage, Awang was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison. Raised by his emotionally scarred mother, Tawfiq grew up blaming his father for their suffering and for everything they lost.

Now, Awang is a free man, but time has caught up with him. Terminally ill and alone in a quiet coastal village in Terengganu, he wishes only to see his son once more. Meanwhile, Tawfiq, on the brink of financial ruin and creative burnout, reluctantly returns home not out of compassion but necessity.

As father and son embark on their final journey, Tawfiq is forced to confront long-suppressed grief, buried memories, and the heavy burden of legacy. Awang’s three final wishes challenge everything Tawfiq once believed.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

“3 Wishes” is a deeply personal exploration of redemption, reconciliation, and the unbreakable yet fragile bonds of family. At its heart, this is a story of two anti-heroes Awang, an ex-convict, and Tawfiq, a struggling artist both burdened by a dark past that makes their reunion seemingly impossible. Their relationship, long fractured and defined by pain, is set against the backdrop of a serene fisherman’s village in Terengganu, Malaysia, a place rich with tradition and cultural heritage.

I want to take the audience into their world, to feel the weight of their regrets and the flickers of hope that emerge from their interactions. The world of “3 Wishes” is not a romanticized one… it is raw, bitter, and painfully real. But it is within this reality that we find the possibility of healing. The setting, with its quiet shores and timeworn boats, serves as both a stark contrast and a silent witness to their journey of acceptance.

This is not just a father-son story; it is a universal tale that resonates with anyone who has ever struggled with reconciliation. Sometimes, the simplest things… a weathered boat, a childhood football, or an old photograph can unlock the door to memories that remind us of love buried beneath years of resentment.

With “3 Wishes”, I want to remind audiences that while we cannot change the past, we can choose to forgive. In doing so, we find peace not just for those we forgive, but for ourselves too. Through Awang and Tawfiq’s journey, I hope to inspire viewers to cherish their own family bonds before time slips away, and to find solace in the beauty of acceptance and understanding.

original music score

The score for “3 Wishes” combines traditional Malay instruments, Rebab, Seruling, Serunai, Jidur, Sunda Drums with contemporary sounds from Violin, Cello, and Acoustic Guitar. Percussive textures such as Tribe Seeds and Tribe Bells are also used for added depth.

Most melodies are drawn from the theme song “Ayah Pergi”, the supporting track “Senja Terakhir”, and the traditional Terengganu folk song “Ulek Mayang”. “Ulek Mayang”, is an iconic cultural piece that symbolizes Terengganu’s heritage.

By blending modern and traditional elements, the music aims to deliver authenticity while promoting Terengganu’s cultural identity to wider audiences.
